UNIFEM and UNFPA will facilitate a workshop on the theme "Budgeting for Reproductive Rights, Using Gender Responsive Budgeting" in Cape Town, on April 24-28, 2006.
Initiated under the UNIFEM/ UNFPA strategic partnership programme, the workshop is aimed at increasing the capacity of UNFPA Country Support teams (CSTs), UNIFEM staff and relevant stakeholders to formulate practical approaches to advocate for and monitor gender responsive budgeting for Reproductive Health and Rights at the country level.
The Cape Town workshop will build on a Resource Pack recently prepared under the UNIFEM/UNFPA collaboration that demonstrates the key linkages between Gender Responsive Budgeting, Reproductive Health and PRSPs, SWAps, and Health Sector Reform and identifies the range of entry points for more gender responsive policies. The resource pack will be available in English, French and Spanish by mid 2006.
The workshop which will bring together 13 participants from UNFPA and UNIFEM Headquarters, CSTs, Field Offices and partner-organizations and will be facilitated by gender budgets expert and author of the Resource Pack, Debbie Budlender.

UNIFEM, UNFPA and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) have launched a web portal on Budgets and Gender in Latin America and the Caribbean. The portal is a platform for knowledge management and exchange on budgets and gender in the region. The portal is targeted to public institutions, decision makers, civil society, and professionals and technicians interested in particular in the Latin American experience, best practices and lessons learned on the subject. The web portal is in Spanish.

Gender-responsive budgeting is a crucial tool for women’s empowerment. In Morocco, UNIFEM has worked with the government to create a more tailored approach in which budgeting can have a more effective and immediate impact. As this documentary illustrates, when the needs of women living in a particular geographical and cultural context are addressed, the entire community benefits. In the past four years, the Finance Ministry of Morocco has made substantial progress in developing both gender-responsive and results-oriented budgetary reform.
