This paper attempts to briefly examine the level of readiness/preparedness of Pacific Island countries (PICs) to advance the process of incorporating gender-responsive budget initiatives into national policies and public expenditure management systems. The paper touches on the ‘how to’ mechanisms for progress based on the recommendations of the Ninth Triennial Conference of Pacific Women in 2004.

This article describes the experience and lesson learned to date during the implementation of gender responsive budgeting in Pakistan through a dedicated project ‘Gender Responsive Budgeting Initiative’. The article provides the background, and details on GRB activities undertaken including implementation of various GRB tools, steps taken to gender sensitize the budgetary processes, linkages and synergies developed, and challenges and lesson learned so far.
Nadeem Mahbub is a government official, he was the National Manager of the GRBI project from its inception in 2005 to August 2007. Ms. Debbie Budlender is an internationally renowned GRB specialist who has acted as advisor to the GRBI project in Pakistan since 2005.

The GRB initiative in Malaysia is spearheaded by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (MWFCD) with financial and technical assistance provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). December, 2005
The initiative focused on training budget officers in the pilot ministries in gender budget analysis skills and developing gender-sensitive budget statements. To this end, the MWFCD produced the following Manual on Gender Budgeting in Malaysia which contains basic information and practical guidance on implementing GRBs.

Bridging the Gap between Gender Analysis and Gender Responsive Budgets: Key Lessons from a Pilot Project in the Republic of the Marshall Island.

This paper examines a GRB pilot project undertaken in the small Pacific country of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). This pilot project was conducted over a one-year budget cycle (September 2002–September 2003), and formed part of a regional technical assistance project funded by the Asian Development Bank. The technical assistance was provided by a University of South Australia (UniSA) consultancy team, comprising four advisors with expertise in gender, economics, policy and budgeting.
