The following are notes from a meeting on gender budgeting which took place in Oaxaca on June 13, 2003. The meeting was organized by the Instituto de la Mujer Oaxaqueña (IMO) and UNIFEM. Presentations at the meeting highlighted gender budget experiences from different contexts, discussed ways to systematize proposals of impact measuring tools, and brought forth methodological advances in gender budget exercises.

Vishuti Patel from the Centre for Women’s Studies, Department of Economics, at the University of Mumbai delivered the following presentation entitled, “Resource Management, Financial Commitment and Monitoring.” The presentation highlights the gender impact of the budget in the Indian context, and analyzes the different governmental schemes and allocations for women and children. In addition, the presentation brings forth a gender audit of the Union government, and outlines demands as articulated by women’s groups in regards to the budget.

The following report outlines the proceedings from the seminar organized through the cooperation between UNIFEM and Women's Alternative Visions from Everywhere (VADO/WAVE), entitled "Rethinking Gender, Democracy and Development: Is Decentralization a Tool for Local Effective Political Voice?" The seminar, which took place in Ferrara, Italy, covered themes relating to decentralization from a women's political agency perspective; decentralization as a tool to increasing women's access to services; and decentralization as a means for effective women's participation in the formulation of local budget and a more gender balanced allocation of local resources.

TITLE: Second Regional Meeting on Gender Budgeting in South Asia

The following is a report of the Second Regional Meeting on Gender Budgets organized by UNIFEM, South Asia Regional Office, and held in Kathmandu on October 15th, 2001. The meeting focused on further developing the gender budget initiatives in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka. Guest speakers spoke on various issues including the reasons behind the lack of progress in mainstreaming gender in different countries, the tools and steps involved in conducting gender analyses of the budget and the pressing need for engendering governance and macroeconomic policies.

Report of the International Experts Meeting held October 24-26, 2005 in Mexico City
Within the framework of the Cooperation Agreement between the Technical Support Team (EAT, initials in Spanish) of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the German Technical Cooperation’s (GTZ) Regional Project “Fiscal Policy with Focus on Gender in Latin America and the Caribbean”, different activities have been developed in the last two years focused on promoting a greater understanding of the relationships between democratic governability, gender equality, reproductive rights and public budgets.
This meeting was organized in response to the demands of governments, women’s and civil organizations and academia for progress in the visibilization and the debate on the future of productive and reproductive work in Latin America and the Caribbean.
