As part of the preparations for International Women’s Day, the Afghan Ministry of Finance announced on March 4th 2007 the opening of its first Gender Budgeting Unit. The purpose of the Gender Budgeting Unit supported by GTZ is to ensure that the budget process is just and fair, and that resources are equally distributed to all citizens.
The Unit will assist the Afghan Government to meet its obligations regarding women’s advancement by analyzing, reviewing and contributing to government policies, programs and budgets. It will also provide advice on gender sensitive programming for sectoral ministries.
For the Deputy Minister of Finance, "it is vital to institutionalize mechanisms to monitor and account for the impact of government spending on men and women. In this sense "the launch of the Gender Budgeting Unit represents a milestone for Afghan women."
